SHORT
SPELLS OF TORRENTIAL RAIN IN HOT DRY AREAS.
I n every hot
dry areas, we get sudden short spells of heavy rain. The land is so hard and
dry and parched that though we expect
the soil to absorb the whole amount of water at one go. Nothing happens. Not even a single drop of water is retained or absorbed
by the hard clay soil . Sand may allow the water to be retained and keep them
collected as in the sandy river beds. But clay once it is dry , it is as hard
as rock and prevent any water percolation. But the soil is indeed not that hard
hearted !!! Just loosen the soil on top. Make some pockets of one or two feet
depth holes. Just make them when the
land is parched. When ever the rain comes for a few hours, all these dug up holes
will collect water and keep it there to be absorbed leisurely by the soil. After two or three
rains, check the land. The soil will be ready for cultivations , with 3-4 feet
soil moist and cultivation ready !! It will be as if we have ploughed them and
watered them ! If the holes are made close to each other we
can simply plant the seeds in these holes. Half work done before rain and
sawing is thus made easy .
Thereafter, each rain will send more water to the
ground
level , reservoirs and the wells and the lakes will
produce water for all purpose.
Land is like human heart. It may appear hard and
callous sometimes. But just a little watering of the heart will release all the
goodness embedded in every one’s heart and mind. Do not keep them parched for
long .
If there are any small or big dried up canals near by,
just dig up two or three feet or build partitions 2-3 feet height and loosen the “ top soil. Rain water
will be collected as and when it rains.
Do not make
partition walls to the land level. When torrential rain occur during
cultivation, the land will be submerged and crop will be flooded . Let the excess water flow
to the other needy people who are down stream ! That way your crop will be safe
and they will get their share !
